The Good Earth, written by Pearl S. Buck, published by John Day Company, in no time became one of the best sellers in 1931. It was translated into more than 30 languages. Buck became the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize for literature, with the help of this book. The cause of books popularity mainly was it’s right timing. As America at that time was suffering from the great depression, Americans could see their reflection in Wang Lung’s suffering. Buck by this novel chose to appeal to normal, and everyday people, rather than choosing the elite or intellectual audience.
